My experience : Prolactin is 110 ug/L… started new BC in September. 15 lbs heavier now. Anyone have any insight?

Hi there lovely people!

So I’m 5’0”, 24 years old, and have been pretty consistently 115 pounds or so for the past few years. I went off my birth control over the summer for a few weeks (I ran out and was out of the country) and then later went back on BC in September — it was a new one (Desorelle) that I hadn’t used before, but I didn’t really think anything of it since I’d never had horrible reactions to BC after 9 or so years of being on the pill. I really didn’t mind switching and didn’t really think much of it. Interesting to note: I have a SUPER irregular period (didn’t have it at all for years, and it was thought I had endometriosis but this wasn’t the case), and this BC was literally the first one EVER to give me somewhat consistent periods. However, I felt super nauseous the first month or so of being on this new pill. I felt so badly that I wanted to switch, but the doctor told me to give it enough time to really kick in. After a month or so, the side effects finally calmed down and I felt pretty OK (other than a little more period pain than usual/really sensitive and heavy boobs).

Fast forward a few months and I’ve gained 15 pounds in the meantime. I feel really bloated and just generally uncomfortable. My IBS is also RAGING lately. I really haven’t changed much at all — in fact, I feel like I eat a little healthier than normal and I typically walk a good bit per day. I used to exercise a bit more, but — honestly — I’m not sure if 15 pounds in 6 months or so adds up. It just seems like so much in such a short time span. I’m now about 130 lbs (the heaviest I’ve been since I was an overweight kid) and decided to see a doctor to see if this weight gain could have been caused by the pill, or something else. He did a general check-up and blood test, and my cortisol and prolactin levels came back high (cortisol was 389, prolactin was 110). The normal high end for cortisol is 327, and the normal high end for prolactin is 25.

Nothing else came back irregular, so we decided to start on a new pill (Annais) and see what happens. I’m a bit concerned about the prolactin levels, though, because it seems pretty high to me. Has anyone experienced high prolactin levels due to BC? If so, did this cause any weight gain/bigger boobs? I’m just wondering if there could be something up with my pituitary gland, since my periods have been so irregular and I didn’t have it at all for years at a time. I also have pain down there so badly that I got checked for endo, but it was guestimated that my IBS was just causing my intestines to hit my ovary. Not sure… I just don’t know if this is my pill messing me up and causing me to gain so much weight in little time, or maybe something else is going on.

Thanks so much for your insight!!! I just really want to feel better and not so bloated/tired/self-conscious.
