Hi. I’ve asked around, and no one will/can give me a straight answer on this.
I have intercourse infrequently (several times per year). I have had issues with birth control in the past that have led my GYN to tell me that the mini pill (norethindrone) is my last resort. (It has been a long and unpleasant journey, please take my word for it that I have exhausted my options.) If I take it long term, as intended, I get painful acne.
Can I use it “as needed”? My question is, can I take the mini-pill daily (at the same time each day, as prescribed) for a week or so whenever I am going to have an encounter that could cause pregnancy? The PI sheet says it’s effective after 2 days. Let’s say I take it 3 days in advance, for the few days I may have intercourse, and a day or two after?
Other info: STIs are not my concern, pregnancy is. I’m limited to non-latex condoms, which are less effective, which is why I want protection from hormonal birth control. I’m in my early 40s.
If anyone has any insight as to why this is a good/ bad idea, please let me know, thanks!
