Hi all, I've been on nexplanon since June 2021. I wanted to share my experience for people considering the implant, or who have it and are considering taking it out before the 6-7 month mark. As always, your results may vary and everyone is different and will experience different side effects and durations of side effects. If you feel you absolutely cannot stand the implant, by all means don't suffer through the good portion of a year. But if you can stick it out, it might get better!
When I first got nexplanon, it was mostly uneventful. I had a few side effects for the first month. For the first 2-3 weeks, I noticed being more emotional, fatigue, and mild-moderate migraines. I was also a little hungrier. The worst side effect was intense health anxiety spurts that would happen at night. It delayed my usual period by a couple weeks.
Things stabilized emotionally after that, but other things got way worse when I got the first irregular bleeding. My nonmedicated bleeding lasted 4-5 days, with heavy cramping and bleeding the first couple days. Nexplanon turned that into 2 weeks of lighter bleeding with months of spotting in between. I bled for nearly 3 months straight. I would sometimes get a week break just for it to restart. I became anemic in this time and had to go on iron pills. Ibuprofen, aleve, and evening primrose oil did not help. I could've gone on the pill to counteract this, but I decided to give it a few more months as it was mostly light bleeding/spotting and just an inconvenience.
Finally things started to regulate about 6/7 months in. I go about 6ish weeks between the irregular bleeding periods, and they last between a week and two weeks. It is more similar to how it used to be before nexplanon as far as 2 days of cramping and heavy bleeding goes, but not as bad.
My advice if you are only mildly to moderately bothered by your nexplanon side effects like irregular bleeding, give it 6-7 months to stabilize. If it doesn't after that then maybe get it removed because it probably isn't going to get better.
