My experience : Delaying period on BC but only take one week of new pills?

So I am currently on Yasmin pill, I will have taken my pill the full 21 days however I was wondering… Is it ok to begin a fresh pack straight away but only take a few days of it? I have tried taking the pill back to back and have heavyish periods so my bleed through ends up being like a normal period. Therefore I don’t want to run two packs together, I literally have an event 4 days after I stop my pill so I know it will come. Am I still protected if I only take one week of the new pack? So for example I would be taking 28days of pill then stopping for my 7 day break and starting a fresh pack? Any info would be great.
