My experience : paraguard success (so far)

i got my copper iud in about ten days ago and i think things are going pretty well for me!

the insertion was straightforward. i was nervous about pain and had to take a break to breathe but when they actually put it in i was shocked at how simple it was! for me it felt like whacking my funny bone but in my cervix—weird but not super painful at all. apparently my cervix is “highly receptive” and shaped in a way that makes the procedure incredibly easy, so take this anecdote with a grain of salt. still, i’m 18 and have never been pregnant so i was still considered high-risk for painful insertion.

i spotted a little bit post-insertion, but i basically just felt my normal period cramps for two days afterward. the third day was way worse and i actually got an ultrasound done to make sure nothing had moved. everything was okay, though, and the doctor said i just needed to rest up.

throughout this past week i’ve been getting sudden twinges of 7-8 level pain in my uterus. it isn’t great, obviously, but it’s manageable with ibuprofen and hearing pads. getting a little exercise has been immensely helpful, too—i haven’t actually “worked out” since getting it in but staying upright and going for walks both made the twinges happen way less.

now i’m on the fourth day of my period and it’s only just now becoming heavy. it was pretty painful the first two days (general pelvic pain and those sharp cramps you get in your asshole) but i tried to stay active through it and i’m doing better now. the first three days i had a very mild, dark flow that i assume was blood left over from insertion. now we’re entering more general period blood territory, but my pain has pretty much subsided (it’s always been a little rough the first two days).

i think menstruation is supposed to get easier as my body gets used to the iud, so hopefully come summer my pain levels will be back to standard :)

overall i’m pretty happy with paraguard! i still hope to use condoms and withdrawal until i decide to start trusting it fully, and i am looking into fertility awareness methods to decide when it is and isn’t condom time (i’ve read about iud pregnancies and the risk makes me pretty nervous still). still, i’m so so so so glad i don’t have to traverse the world of hormonal bc.

hopefully my experience makes people less nervous about the copper iud! a lot of the horror stories seem to be outliers—the reason we see them so often is because people are more likely to post about a shitty experience than an underwhelming one.
