My experience : Overall positive IUD experience-Mirena and Misoprostol

I will give some background information first! But if you want the TLDR of the experience, scroll to the bottom!

I am 25 and was on the pill from ages 14-25. No kids. It was for period regulation/lighter cycles etc. I had tried a new pill last year and it went horribly-bad bad acne, low low libdio (I got my first bf last year and libdio just didn't exist), and just felt very foggy. I tried to go "natural" and focus on cycle tracking for contraceptive, then other supplements for the harsh, intense periods (They can make me throw up and just crying even after 4 advil, etc), but I am moving in with my BF (across states, so I am also losing insurance) and just didn't want to deal with the bleeding through pads, staining sheets, etc so I decided IUD is the best option for me right now.

I made the appointment for June 3rd. It was just a consultation and we decided Mirena. Because I am moving in a few weeks, I needed this ASAP so they got me in for today, June 8th.

Before:

I was prescribed Misoprostol (2 pills-vaginal insertion 4 hours before the appointment). There are SO many horror stories on here about these pills. In MY experience, I felt nothing. I made sure to eat lightly before hand (a bagel) and I also took Tylenol (I had a bad headache when I woke up-just nerves and dehydration imo). There might've been one cramp or so in the 4 hours I had the two white pills in there, but that's it. I didn't feel nauseous, nor did I bleed, etc. I was mostly concerned for this and it was just...nothing. It was $3 out of pocket with my insurance.

I also took 800 ibuprofen 1 hour before.

She said she could prescribe me Xanax, but she couldn't let me drive home, so I said no. I just took some CBD before hand too.

During:

The NP used lube?gel? for her finger to feel for my cervix first. She also tried to remove the pills, but couldn't quite get them, but she said it was no big deal and she would just remove them once the speculum was inside.

She used the speculum to open me up-no pain, just uncomfortable. Lots of pressure and uncomfortable but this didn't hurt. Last year, when I had my pap, this was an awful experience. It hurt last time-but not this time!

Then she explained when she was cleaning off my cervix-no pain, hardly felt it.

She warned me when the first pinch was coming. I think I was severely overwhelmed at this point because I didn't know what to expect. People said "bad menstrual cramp", but what does that mean? We all experience cramps differently! But I understand now. For me, it wasn't that sharp cramp (I get these when I try to poop on my period). It was that achy pain-like maybe I forgot to take ibuprofen as soon as I woke up on day 1-2 of my period. The kind that makes you want to have a heating pad pressed to your stomach all day. Was it bad? Yes. But was it short? Yes.

She warned me when there would be another pinch/cramp. I literally thought to myself: No way, I am going to pass out, I can't do this. How can I do that AGAIN? And by the time I finished that thought, it was over.

Before the first pinch, they said I could take my mask off, which initially I didn't, but I had to after the second pinch for a minute because I felt panicky from being overwhelmed. I kept closing my eyes and they had to tell me to keep them open. This was frustrating because I felt more relaxed with them closed, but the most of it was over.

I stayed laying on the bed for a few minutes. Then eventually moved into the sitting position for another few minutes. Eventually, the nurse came in and said if I felt good, I could leave. So I got dressed and did!

Overall, I am glad I did it, but it did hurt (less than 15 seconds of intense pain). The nurses said some people scream/yell, but it was just a bit of a gasp and watery eyes for me. It was over VERY fast. The build up was 100% worse in my experience. I felt so overwhelmed I started crying and quickly had to clarify to them that I was okay and the build up just made me really emotional.

After:

I am currently at home, about 2 hours after the procedure. I drove myself home just fine. I am currently typing at my desk, but about to go lay down on the couch with my heating pad. I am very crampy, but nothing I haven't felt before. This feels like day 1 of my period cramps when I am at work and forgot ibuprofen. Tolerable, but I definitely don't feel amazing. Fingers crossed for a smooth few years!

TLDR: Painful, but tolerable because it's so fast. I was given Misoprostol to insert 4 hours before, took 800mg ibuprofen 1 hour before, and CBD to calm my nerves. Made sure to eat food and drink water.
