My experience : Periods are back?

I have been on the pill for 6 years. I was put on it because of really painful heavy periods. During this time, I would rarely get a period. Maybe once every 4-5 months. Even then they were really light and lasted a day or two. I noticed for the past 6ish months my period has started to come back. I had a heavy period, then the next month I had 2 periods within 3 weeks.

I just switched pill brands last month because my insurance stopped covering what I was previously on and I was hoping it would cause my period to stop again, but now I am having a heavy, painful period again.

Is this normal? Is it possible to have gained a “tolerance” to the pill?
