My experience : Why is birth control so scary? :(

I am 18 and have been having sex with my boyfriend for 8ish months now. We use condoms and I track my cycle but I KNOW I need to be on real birth control. I wouldn't keep the baby if I got pregnant, but the idea of an abortion is scary. For some reason getting on hormonal birth control has always terrified me. I'm worried about mood swings and gaining weight and all the other side effects. Every girl my age that I speak with has told me something along the lines of "yeah it sucks and you'll change but at least you won't get pregnant!" I just feel so sad that I have to commit to a change in personality or in my body just to not have a baby. I just know I'm being stupid by not being on birth control. I just don't even know where to start. I've had like 4 planned parenthood appointments to talk to them about birth control and I've cancelled all of them out of anxiety. So I thought starting here would be a good first step for me. Ladies, what are your experiences with birth control? What kind do you recommend/advise against? My mom never spoke with me about sex or bodies or birth control so I don't know who to ask. Thanks <3
