My experience : I hate my Kyleena
I was on the pill from age 15 to 32, when I went off the pill to conceive my first child. As a teenager, I tried several different low-dose pills that all gave me breakthrough bleeding before finally finding a pill that worked for me, Low-Ogestrel. After giving birth to my first baby, I thought it would be nice to try a non-hormonal option in order to see if my mood might be better off the hormones. I planned to get a Paragard IUD. Not only would this be non-hormonal, but I thought it would be low maintenance and low stress.
Long story short, I allowed myself to be talked into the Kyleena (hormonal) IUD. (Shame on me.) I got it 3 weeks ago and have been bleeding for 2 weeks straight. I’m having flashbacks to being a teenager and having to try multiple BC methods before finally not bleeding all the time. This IUD is absolutely not low maintenance or low stress. I’m ruining all my underwear, having to use panty liners all the time, worrying about bleeding through my pants, and feeling too self-conscious for sex due to the constant bleeding.
I’m reading that this “irregular bleeding” (which is apparently code for NONSTOP bleeding) could last 3-6 months. I regret not doing more research before getting the Kyleena. I might only have this IUD for a year or two if my husband and I try for a second kid. Six months of suffering isn’t worth it for a year of birth control.
My OB doesn’t seem to think the Paragard would be any better. Anyone have any experience switching from a hormonal IUD to a copper one?
What if I went back on Low-Ogestrel? Would it still take my body a long time to adjust?
TLDR: I hate my Kyleena. Should I switch to Paragard? The pill? Stick it out?
Thanks!
