My experience : Period 8 days early?

Okay so to begin, my girlfriend started a new dose of the pill 2 months ago. At the beginning of this new dose, she got some breakthrough bleeding (brown, spotty) and that lasted about 2 days, and it occurred about 2 weeks before her first period while on this new dose. Her first period on this new dose was extremely light, and only lasted about 2-3 days. Let me preface by saying that she will usually get her period around day 3-4 of the placebo week but her period following started on day 1. Obviously not a huge concern but different to what typically happens.

Well, now we are here. Yesterday, she started to bleed, and it wasn’t typical to the breakthrough bleeding she has experience before. This is red in color and enough to use a tampon. Is this her period, or possibly just more breakthrough bleeding? She has been on birth control for about 5 years, but this is the first time she has ever changed doses. This happened very unexpectedly and since this is the 3rd cycle since she changed doses, i didn’t know if this was common.

(EDIT) She is very good with her pill and never misses it. Most that will happen is she maybe takes it 10 minutes later or something like that.
