My experience : Positive Paragard Insertion Experience
Hi! I just wanted to share my Paragard insertion experience from earlier today.
I'm 19 and have never been pregnant or given birth. I have a very low pain tolerance and get very anxious, especially at doctor's offices. However, I am even more terrified of pregnancy, so I was very excited to get an IUD. I've been on the pill for 2 years prior to my IUD insertion.
I took 0.5 mg of Xanax about one hour before insertion, 600mg naproxen about one hour before insertion, and another 200mg naproxen + 200mg ibuprofen about 30 minutes before insertion. I was prescribed 400 mcg of misoprostol to take orally 2-4 hours before insertion, but I only took one (200 mcg) about 3 hours before insertion due to the possible side effects. I got my IUD about 4 days after the end of my "period" (actually just withdrawal bleeding from the pill).
The nurse practitioner who did my insertion seemed very experienced, and she used some numbing gel. I had my boyfriend there to squeeze his hand, and he talked to me to distract me. I focused on my breathing and not tensing up. I had two strong cramps within a minute of each other, one during the measurement and one for the actual insertion. The cramps hurt badly, probably an 8/10 sharp pain, but only for about 5 seconds each. I felt pretty nauseous (mostly from the anxiety and all the medication) and a little dizzy, but I was able to get up within a few minutes. It's been about 4 hours now, and I've had some cramps (about 4/10 pain) and a little spotting but I feel mostly great.
It's definitely an uncomfortable experience and there is sharp pain for a few seconds, but it really wasn't that bad for me, and I think it was definitely worth it.
