My experience : Skyla experience [almost] 1 month-post insertion
TLDR: skyla experience so far so good. 6/10 insertion pain, some spotting, longer period with more intense cramps
After much deliberation (talking with my OBGYN, learning about friends’ experiences, and reading through this sub), I got my IUD inserted on July 20.
Background: Mid-20s with no kids (and no previous pregnancies). Was on a combo pill (Apri) from 2018 to mid-2021. My experience with side effects was very marginal. The only thing I can think of was a bit of trouble with vaginal dryness. Pre-IUD my periods typically lasted for about 5 days, starting with medium cramps that only occurred on day 1, and the flow ranged from medium to light (regular pads have always worked for me)
Insertion experience: I was prescribed Misoprostol pills for the softening of my cervix, to make the insertion pain more manageable. One for the night before and one for the morning of. I experienced some mild cramps and diarrhea 😅 (which I was advised would happen). I also took 800mg of ibuprofen an hour before my appointment. As someone with pretty low pain tolerance, I was pleasantly surprised by the experience. It started out like an extended Pap smear, and then the measuring and insertion part lasted no more than 2 minutes with pain that resembled some really bad menstrual cramps. I’d say it was a 6-7 on a scale of 10.
Post-Insertion: Experienced cramps, spotting, and occasional nausea for 5 days straight after that, then just spotting for a couple more days. I started spotting again on the 30th, and along with that came some cramping. Eventually realized my period was beginning (on schedule) around 8/1, and as of today it’s finally finished 😅 The flow was pretty consistent for the nearly two weeks, and I experienced a lot more cramping than usual, but nothing too crazy. All things that I was advised to expect, so I’m hoping that my body will be adjusted soon!
