My experience : Why am I still spotting? Anyone else have similar problems?
I'm a 21F and I've been on birth control (pills) for period control ever since I was 19. The first pill I took (desogestrel/ethinyl estradiol 0.15mg/0.02mg), it was for about 2 years (of which I was never sexually active, so no STIs or pregnancies to blame), and I must have spotted each month, for several days at a time throughout the month, enough actually to feel more like a light-ish period than spotting. And then "period"/placebo week would roll around and I would still get a period each month (should I have switched sooner? Yes, but the fact of the matter was freshman/sophmore me was more worried about worse symptoms on a new pill since I didn't get any symptoms other than lots of breakthrough bleeding).
Shortly after the 2 year mark, I started taking a different brand in an attempt to deal with the breakthrough bleeding (same hormones, just a slightly higher estrogen concentration 0.03mg). I went nearly a year thinking that simply increasing the estrogen dose helped, but then the breakthrough bleeding came back, well past the usual 3 month trial period mind you, enough where last month I bled for 10 days straight, throughout the entirety of each day. I was (and still am) sexually active on that pill, but breakthroughs began happening again, first two weeks before my period, then for several days at a time a good week or so before my periods, and so on. Note, I was still trying to have a period each month, and was getting one in addition to the spotting (I think there must have only been two months during that script in particular where I didn't bleed at all even on the placebo week). Now, STI panels, 4 pregnancy tests, and 1 yeast infection (which I found out I had after that 10-day bleed) later I've started a new birth control pill (drospirenone/ethinyl estradiol 3mg/0.03mg).
I know it's hard to believe, but I have taken my pills, regardless of the prescription, each day at the same exact time (or within 10 minutes) since I started taking pills, so skipping pills or late doses shouldn't be an issue. And each time I've switched prescriptions I've started the script the very next day (since I take my pills in the morning). So my question now is, having started this new script (about 2.5 weeks in) and breakthrough bleeding/spotting occurring for about 4 days now, is this because of the new prescription? Foreshadowing for more breakthrough bleeding in the future? I've talked to my doctor and most of her responses have been attributing it to stress, but no real concern (clean health, blood pressure, etc.). I even wanted to try skipping my periods altogether, but I hear that it also is common to experience breakthrough bleeds when skipping periods.
Has anyone else struggled with breakthroughs or spotted this commonly? What did you folks try for it? Thanks and have a blessed one yall.
