My experience : Paraguard IUD expelled after almost 3 months of insertion. What next?
After almost 3 months of having my cooper IUD and LOVING it (besides the insanely heavy/long periods which I was already accustomed to) it somehow expelled and ended up in the lower part of my uterus. Yeah, that was fun. I wake up one morning and after using the bathroom I still feel like I need to push something out, kinda like I had tampon up there (I was on period so I was thinking there’s a very rare chance that I accidentally left one) so I put my fingers up there and I felt something but wasn’t really sure what it was, however it wasn’t a tampon. —Keep in mind since the day my IUD was inserted I had never been able to feel my strings but in certain sexual positions by boyfriend could, so before this day we thought everything was completely fine. I also had my strings checked and was told it was completely normal if I couldn’t feel them, as the stings could’ve wrapped around my cervix and that it was in the perfect position.— After nothing would come out I thought it was maybe just nerves, I was graduating this day so that was expected lol. So I put a tampon in like normal, and I felt such discomfort/slight pain but kinda shrugged it off thinking it was cramps. Yes I had obviously worried about expulsion before but the chance of that happening is SO slim that I was like no way this could happen to me especially on the day I’m graduating… Fast forward I’m experiencing pain/discomfort all day so then I start to think oh no it must be my IUD, and finally around 6pm on a Friday I decide to call my obgyn. Well obviously by then her office was closed so she told me to come in first thing Monday morning (both of us still not knowing if my iud had expelled). So I go all weekend doing my normal activities that were planned just with a little extra pain and discomfort. By Sunday I’m convinced I was just paranoid and that everything is fine because I feel better and can’t feel anything down there anymore. Monday, my appointment rolls around and one ultrasound later, yup it did expel :( We don’t know how, maybe the fact that my uterus is too small to accept this foreign body (since paraguard is the biggest IUD) or possibly my cramps/bleeding were too much and pushed it out, idk. But oddly enough one arm was bent a little so of course taking it out was not the most comfortable thing ever. I wanted to shared my experience since reading all the threads about IUDs and to see if anyone can relate. Has this happened to anyone? If so, did you get another paraguard? I’m currently planning to get skyla since it’s a lower dose of hormones than the others, yet still small compared to paraguard. But I don’t want to go through insertion again just to have it expel again it a few months!
Disclaimer: although my iud expelled I’d recommend it over and over again I loved it. To my shock expelling it wasn’t as scary as everyone makes it out to be. I was terrified at the thought it might’ve expelled when it first happened but it all turned out okay (just my experience)
