My experience : Pill schedule got messed up, when should I take my next one??

I've been taking the combo pill for 6-7 years but the brand I was using got discontinued and I didn't find out until I went to go refill my prescription. By the time my doctor prescribed me a new one and I got it refilled I had already missed what should have been my first 3 days of active pills.

I usually start my pack on a Sunday as it works out that I get my period during the week and it's over by the weekend. So I thought by this point I would just wait until Sunday to start the new pack. However, I have an event to go to this Sunday and I would hate to take my first pill and then being dealing with unknown side effects while I'm there.

Can I take start my new pill pack now at the 4th pill, as if I had taken the first 3 (like just skip them)? That way I can see if I have side effects beforehand. I also know I won't be protected until I have taken the pill for a week and will have to use a backup method.
