My experience : Getting my period on the pill?

I just started taking the pill a week ago yesterday, and was surprised to see I had gotten what seems to be my period this morning after I was told my period date would change (to be clear, this week was when I would be expecting my period normally), with mild cramping. I’m wondering if this is just a situation of breakthrough bleeding, which I know is common when starting the pill, or if I actually am on my period, and if I should be worried that the date didn’t actually change.
