My experience : Kyleena IUD severe PMS side effects after 1.5 years

Hi everyone, I’ve been experiencing some very severe PMS symptoms lately (since around May 2022 during each luteal phase) that have been progressively getting worse to the point where it is debilitating. I think it’s due to my Kyleena IUD I received October 2020 so I guess I’m seeking advice or responses from people who have experienced similar things and/or have found a solution or a diagnosis.

I went to my gynecologist and they prescribed me Nikki (generic version of Yaz) and that has taken away the physical symptoms (severe cramping, pelvic pain, and breast soreness among some other things) but not the mental symptoms (anxiety, paranoia, sadness, overwhelm, lack of control, crying spells, irritability, feeling on edge) all of which impact my ability to do my work and navigate my personal life.

I have considered that it could be PMDD but I don’t know because of the IUD and timing and I haven’t been officially diagnosed. I also have a friend who said that this sort of thing can happen with low dose hormone IUDs like Kyleena after 1-2 years following insertion and can be relieved with additional birth control but I haven’t been able to find too much about it anywhere including additional treatments besides birth control.

So, a bit of a timeline: - October 2020: Received Kyleena - October 2020-October 2021: No period and very minimal PMS symptoms. Maybe some cramping but nothing out of the ordinary. - October 2021: spotting started plus or minus every month, fairly irregular. Strings were intact and in January 2022 I got them checked professionally. - April 2022: Extreme breast soreness and tenderness started (was not as bad during my period) - May 2022: The noticeable worsening of mental symptoms - June 2022: debilitating worsening of mental and physical symptoms listed above. Saw gynecologist and with the start of Nikki birth control, physical symptoms lessened and went away.

Any help or advice or explanations would be greatly appreciated. I’m tempted to just take all birth control away if this continues because it isn’t sustainable. Thanks all.
