My experience : Nexplanon Removal Experience

I got my nexplanon removed this morning and I figured I’d share my experience here. Sorry in advance that this might be all over the place since I’m still really out of it. I don’t want to scare anyone or deter them from getting Nexplanon if it’s the right choice for them, but it was horrible for me, which was mostly my fault. I arrived to my appointment and they started numbing me with ice right away. After the ice, they injected me with a numbing agent in my arm and it just felt like getting a regular shot. The doctor assured me that removal would take 5-10 minutes max so I was trying to relax and not panic too much. I should add that I have an intense fear of things being under my skin (thanks Dad for letting me watch “The Mummy” when I was young. iykyk) so I was already quite anxious about getting it removed as I had already had a panic attack when getting it inserted 3 years ago. After numbing, she made the incision and started digging around to remove the implant. I should add that I didn’t feel any pain when the incision was made and initially the digging around didn’t hurt. However, after 30 minutes had passed and it still wasn’t removed, I was really starting to panic. I wasn’t consciously panicking, but my body was reacting. I told my doctor that I was starting to feel nauseous and faint but she assured me it was just my nerves and walked me through deep breathing. Apparently, it’s quite common for the implant to hug onto the fat and muscle in your arm and mine just didn’t want to budge. Another 5 minutes passed and I could tell that my body was starting to shut down. i was dissociating, sweating, nauseous, unable to breathe and completely losing it. Full blown panic attack. I was having anxiety paralysis and was unable to move my hands or legs and I was fighting to hold onto consciousness. My doctor yelled for another nurse to come quickly and then I blacked out. I don’t remember much after that but when I came to, it was finally removed. I was held for observation to make sure I could drive home for another 20 minutes. Several hours have since passed and my arm is killing me. Nexplanon was overall the wrong choice for me.
